Henry Paine fell at Mansfield packing ice and fractured his collar bone.

Homer Dennis is under bonds of $400 for his appearance at court on a charge of bastardy preferred by an inmate of the county infirmary.

Belle Miller has filed her petition against Wm. Horn, in Common Pleas Court, asking damages in the sum of $5,000 for breach of promise.  Wm. Horn, a benedict of two short weeks, came to grief on Saturday last, by being brought before 'Squire Paterson on the charge of bastardy, preferred by Miss Belle Miller.  Horn was bound over to Common Pleas Court and gave bond in the sum of $500 for his appearance.  Both parties reside about three miles southeast of Independence.  -- reprinted from the Mansfield Shield & Banner.

Bellville.

G.W. Maxfield's father has gone to Tolone, Ill.

A boy has been born to J.A. Hamilton and wife.

Another girl has arrived at J.I. Kanaga's, Mansfield.

John Weirick is back from a tour through the far southwest.

Al. Horn is in New York taking a course in the college at Poughkeepsie.

Rev. Murray, living near Independence, has sold his farm and bought near Ashland.

Elmer Shafer was at his home west of town for the holidays.  He is at work in Mansfield.

Miss Anna Potts was at home for the holidays.  She returns to her school at Leipsic this week.

Mr. Daniel Riggle and Miss Sarah Jones were married at Mt. Olive church the 26th. inst.

Mrs. A. Growden, of Darlington, returned last week from a visit to relatives in Pennsylvania.

Mr. & Mrs. J. Frank Bowers spent New Years here the guests of Mr. & Mrs. G.P. Rinehart.

F.A. Black, of Albion, Ind., is spending a few weeks with friends and relatives in this vicinity.

Miller Shafer and conductor Cramer, of the B.&O., paid a holiday visit to relatives of the first named, west of town.

Mr. Frank Miller and Miss Elna Corbett, of Perry Township, were married on the 20th. of December by Rev. T.K. Davis.

J.M. Coleman was at home with his family for the holidays.  He now travels for the Steubenville Pottery Co.

A. Mr. Taylor from near Independence and Miss Samila Hendrickson, of this vicinity, were married by Justice Hamilton Thursday, Dec. 28th.

All the children and grandchildren of A. Raudebaugh gathered at his residence in an unbroken circle, Sunday, sharing the hospitalities of his home and table.

Winfield Johns appeared before the Mayor for assault, drunkenness, and disorderly conduct on Christmas day, and was given twenty days in addition to a fine of $13.20, to stand committed until fine is paid.

N.O. Smith has bought a very desirable farm of 160 acres in Clinton County, Mich., paying therefor $67 an acre.  The purchase is just outside the limits of Shepherdsville, and has all the conveniences that could be desired.

Dr. T.T. Austin has been on the sick list.

Curt Reid is turning out some fine cigars, which sell readily.

Miss Dempsey, of Mansfield, was the guest of Miss Anna Payne, Sunday.

J.O. Miles has been on the sick list for a week or more but is now convalescent.

Wm. Guyselman has gone to Union City.  He sold his harness business to his father.

Elzia Beam died one day last week, and was buried at Petersburgh, Ashland County.

Last week G.H. Stewart visited his aunt, Mrs. E. Hiskey, were of town.  He resides at Bucyrus.

Foster Walker and Mike Bolinger have returned from a pleasant jaunt through Indiana and Michigan.

C.B. Hines has completed one year's business on the cash system, and is well pleased over the results.

Mrs. E.F. Warren has gone to Columbus to do a drug business.  She intends to return as soon as the new brick rooms are ready for occupancy.

The report that a change in the B.&O. agency took place at Lexington, had everything but a foundation.  Mr. Abernathy is still agent and operator.

Strangers in town the past week visiting and talking business:  Ed. Marshall, Mansfield;  C.S. Swank, Nevada (Oh);  S.M. Douglass, Mansfield;  L.M. Gibson, West Salem;  Dr. J.V. Ireland, Jamestown.

A memorial service was held at the Universalist church Sunday over the death of Rev. W.B. Woodbury, at which the kindest words were spoken to his memory, and his departure from the field of usefulness deeply mourned.

The case of the State of Ohio vs. John Fox, shooting with intent to kill, has been dropped, the prosecution in lack of sufficient evidence to convict, wisely saying "nolle prosequi" -- reprinted from the Mansfield Liberal.  Mr. Fox appears to have come out from under the charge without much difficulty and the prosecution apparently found the "nolle prosequi" route very convenient.

A little boy of Levi Evart's was terribly poisoned Friday evening by taking some belladonna which he got hold of by means of a chair while Mrs. Evarts was out milking.  The drug had been set there just for a time, while some house cleaning was being done.  As soon as the discovery was made that the child was poisoned Dr. McMahon was called, and by the timely use of the proper antidotes the effects of the deadly poison were counteracted, although the patient lingered sometime before signs of recovery appeared.

L.L. Swank is here from Delaware keeping grocery for his father who has gone to Green Springs.

Philip Adams has gone to Sandusky, to visit his sick daughter, in response to a telegram received Tuesday.

A sad happening occurred to Miss Nettie Freeman at the Masquerade ball on Tuesday evening about nine o'clock.  She with some others was standing by the highly heated stove at one end of the hall, when her dress caught fire and burned her seriously.  She was attired in a dress of tarlatan which is of a very light texture, and burned rapidly;  and it was sometime after her cries were heard that the flames were extinguished.  Dr. McMahon was present and dressed the injured parts, which were one hand, wrists and chin, the skin coming off during the operation.  the unfortunate young lady was removed to Mr. Philpott's and made as comfortable as possible.  Her home is at Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Henry Bottomly was married by Rev. Smith, on the twenty-first of last month, to Miss Mary Hiker, at the residence of Mr. Wm. Hiker, the father of the bride.  Mr. John Fidler and Miss Mary Krause acted as Groomsman and Bridesmaid, besides their relatives there was quite a number of friends in attendance.  After the marriage ceremony was over a bountiful supper spread, and by appearance you would suppose they were all enjoying themselves.  From the presents they received you would be led to think that friends had not forgotten them.  I tell you they were nice.  -- Mansfield Shield & Banner.

Independence.

About fifty witnesses were subpoenaed by the State vs. D.C. Severns.

L. Shafer visited some "relatives" at Toledo.  How are they?

W.D. McClellen, of Toledo, is visiting friends in this vicinity.

We are happy to announce that our friend John Taylor has left the "Bachelors League" and has taken unto himself a wife.  May happiness be with them.  What next?

Samuel Phipps and family are visiting relatives in Ft. Wayne.

Wm. McClellan is selling goods at cost at his store on West Main Street.  Hats, Caps and Gents' Furnishing goods are being disposed of as well as clothing.

D. Zartman accompanied by L.C. Mengert, visited his parents at Newark on Wednesday of last week.

Richard Harris, of Pittsburg, is visiting his parents.

Thos. McBee, agent B.&O. R.R., has resigned, and will start west in a few days.  We are sorry to see him leave us.  He certainly was a very accommodating young man.  L.C. Ball has accepted the agency.

A. Calhoun visited friends at Findlay on Friday and Saturday.

Mrs. I.S. Donnel, of Mansfield, was visiting her brother, Lester Traxler, last week.

Mt. Olive.

Preaching next Saturday evening at Bethany Chapel.  Eld. Cline will officiate.

Mrs. Rummel and Mrs. Quail, of Crestline, are visiting their parents and other friends here.

After the literary exercises were over last Saturday evening, the whole crowd both old and young, proceeded to the residence of Mrs. Riggle, formerly Mrs. Jones and gave her one of the old-fashioned "bellings".

M.W. Daugherty visited friends at Lexington New Years.
